To those looking for something new in a world of copies and clones, welcome the XCOIL! No pretender to an existing throne, the XCOIL reigns supreme in its own tonal space. One of a kind sounds are possible using 4 coils to create a minimum of 5 possible coil combinations, unique tonal voices that inspire musical creativity. Each coil is hand wound and balanced to properly match with the others. Currently the best way to experience the XCOIL is in an Urquhart Guitars "Leo". Additional compatible models will be added soon. Kits are available in the store to those looking to modify existing instruments.
Voices of the xcoil
Standard Wiring setup
5 Way Switch Controlled
P1 - The most traditional sounding position, P1 is bass forward with the most presence and output. Dark, but very useable...most likely to end up on for standard lead playing.
P2 - WIDE range. This position is great solo playing as it really fills up the tonal spectrum, but can also fill a unique role in a musical setting. Try some spread out alternate tunings in P2, see how far that tone can stretch.
P3 - Real twang at your fingertips, with more mellow mids than a standard bridge position pickup. Lowest output, but very articulate when the amp is turned up.
P4 - The most unique sound of the bunch, this one is just plain fun! Thick, forward mids and treble with lots of spank in the low end.
P5 - This position is extremely customizable, although the standard setup is coils 1+3 wired together in parallel. This results in a cut in output and stiffness compared to P2. P5 can also be setup to combine other coils in parallel, or a number of other combinations upon request.
Design/Looking ahead
The first challenge of bringing the XCOIL into reality was the relatively complex physical structure. The solution was to 3D print the frame and bobbins in a plastic with sufficient strength and rigidity. This also allows for a certain amount of color customization. Looking ahead to future changes, frame material and construction may alter to keep up with improving technologies. Milled aluminum or brass covers are on the horizon.
Alternate Wiring Setup 2
series/off/parallel x4
Wiring Setup 2 is offered at an upcharge from the standard setup due to the extra parts and fitting work. It allows for any amount of coil combinations in either series or parallel, a slightly more complicated interface in exchange for more tonal options.
Installation/modding
Allowing for aftermarket installation in guitars is an important concept for us. That is why we offer pre wired pickguards/switching setups and cavity templates for all of our pickups. We can cut most standard pick guard shapes for compatible guitars, with endless layout combinations of not only Urquhart designed pickups, but classic designs as well. From there you can choose a wiring/switching setup and pickguard material. Templates for pickup cavities are available for those with a router and flush trim bit. Installation services are also offered, contact us for quotes or more info.
